Program Description

Event Details

June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his Countess Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo for ardent Serbian nationalists.  The Austrians were intent on war against their upstart neighbor.  The major powers of Europe will engage in a progression of diplomacy that was almost guarantied to fail, as ardent nationalists throughout Europe sought to wage that global conflict that would create a new balance of power, subverting royal houses that had been in power for centuries.  A war that will result in the extinction of monarchical rule and, pave the way for Bolshevism, Fascism, Nazism and foster the extension of industrialized militarism. Join us as we explore the beginning of World War I.

Mark Albertson is the historical research editor for the Army Aviation magazine, and the historian for the Army Aviation Association of America. He has taught classes on military history at Norwalk Community College as well as the Lifetime Learners Institute. Albertson has authored several books on military history.
