Welcome to the Children’s Department!
The Children’s Department of the Southbury Library provides a safe, nurturing and culturally stimulating environment for children and adults that encourages lifelong reading and learning.
In our beautiful area, we feature a circulation desk with library assistants to check out books, offer readers advisory assistance and place materials on hold. We also have a self check out computer for simple transactions. Our library knight, Sir Read-A-Lot, is always at attention to watch over the days events.
With a technology grant, we have added to our department three Kindle Fire tablets loaded with preschool games for our littlest patron’s education and enjoyment in our preschool area. We also have puzzles, pictures to color and a cornucopia of toys for our children to enjoy.
For our school age children, we have a bank of computers in our reference area. To log on or print, all that is needed is a valid library card. As time allows, we have reference help available at the Reference Desk.
Storytimes and booktalks for all ages are offered year round. Other monthly programs can include Storytime Yoga, Lego to the Library Club, Wii Have Fun, Lunch Bunch Indoor Picnic & Movie and Movies & Munchies, a monthly Friday night movie event, in addition to our extremely popular Summer Reading Program. Check our calendar and website links for details.
The Friends of the Southbury Library have purchased passes for a variety of area museums that are available for checkout to Southbury patrons over 18 yrs of age. For a list of museums & discount information check the link on the Library’s website.
The Children’s Department encourages volunteering at the Library for grades 4 and up through the Junior Friends of the Library. This group meets the first Thursday of the month at 6:00. There is also a Teen Advisory Board specifically for older children who wish to volunteer.
